Car Insurance - Frequently Asked Questions

If you are unable to secure a quotation in the market including your renewal, you can refer your case to the Declined Cases Agreement. The Declined Cases Agreement (DCA) is a mechanism whereby motorists who experience difficulty in obtaining motor insurance can apply for cover under this programme.

Most Insurance companies are party to an agreement with the Department of Transport. Insurers, through the mechanism of the Declined Cases Committee, will not decline to provide a motor policy for those individual proposers who have approached at least three insurers and have not been able to obtain insurance cover where the proposer is:

• One of their existing Motor policyholders or one who has held a policy with them in the preceding three years, or
• A new Proposer who has not within the preceding three years held motor insurance in his/her own name,
• Except where to provide such a policy would be contrary to the public interest.

A committee representing all Insurers who are party to this agreement has been established for the purpose of administrating the Agreement. You can make changes to your car insurance policy through MyAviva.

If your policy number begins with 93 and looks like this 930000000, you can make the following changes through your portal:

• Transferring your insurance to another car
• Adding and removing drivers
• Request additional documents
• Changing your address
• Changing your contact details

For all other policy numbers brought directly from Aviva Direct, you can make the following changes through your portal:

• Transferring your insurance to another car
• Renewing your existing car policy
• Adding and removing drivers

Please note certain requests will incur a €25 administration fee if you contact us via the Customer Service Team.

You will be require to upload any outstanding documents before you can print your cert & disc.

Once you have uploaded/provided us with these outstanding documents you will be able to print your cert & disc:

• Through MyAviva: If you're opted-in to online documentation.
• By post: If you're not opted-in to online documentation.

If you're opted in online your car insurance certificate and disc will be made available within 5 days or after the start date of your policy whichever is later.

If you're not opted-in to online documentation your car insurance certificate and disc will be issued to you by post with in 5 days or after the start date of your policy whichever is later.

If you do not need to make any amendments to your policy, then you can simply renew online through our online form.

All you need is your policy number and date of birth. If you do need to make amendments before renewing, please contact us on 1800 332 211.

Your policy documentation, including your annual car insurance certificate and disc, will be made available or issued within 5 days or after the start date of your policy whichever is the later:

• Through MyAviva: If you're opted-in to online documentation.
• By post: If you're not opted-in to online documentation.

For policies beginning with 93 you will find your policy documents under the heading "Policy documents"

For all other car insurance policies brought directly through Aviva Direct go to "View documents" to view your policy documents.

The first step is to provide your insurer, Aviva Insurance, with some personal details – like your name and policy number. You'll then be able to tell them what happened in your own words, as well as what damage your vehicle suffered. It'll be helpful to give them details of anyone else involved – other drivers, passengers in any cars involved, or witnesses.

The Multi Car discount  can be applied if there is more than one car in the same household insured through Aviva Direct. So, if you are an existing customer with Aviva Direct and someone in the same household takes out a second car insurance policy our Multi Car discount can be applied to the second policy, and to each additional policy up to a maximum of five, provided each policyholder resides in the same household (same address).
